Big day for non profits

Local charities look for help on Giving Tuesday

Nov 27, 2023 | 6:00 AM

While Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are all important days for retailers and the economy, non-profits hope there is still some money left to support Giving Tuesday.

It has rapidly become the most important day of the year as a world-wide movement including Canada where $50 million is donated in just 24 hours.

Locally, the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, arguably the largest charitable organization in the North Okanagan, has announced a matching gift of up to $50,000 courtesy Grizzly Curb and Concrete owners Linda and Gord Ball. The campaign is for an additional X-ray machine at VJH.

Other charities have smaller but no less important Giving Tuesday campaigns.

This year the Vernon Public Art Gallery will be raising funds for the Regional Reach travelling art kit and their art education programs like Family Saturdays and Mini Artists, with a goal of $2,500 on the day.

Vernon Women in Business is holding a special event on Tuesday in support of the Archway Society for Domestic Peace.

The North Okanagan Hospice Society is launching its largest annual fundraising campaign on Giving Tuesday, with a mail-out campaign to donors and a community appeal, to support grief and bereavement programming.

Dozens of other local charities are also getting in on the action.

The Community Foundation of the North Okanagan is holding a special event at the Prestige Hotel on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 to announce grants to dozens of organizations.
