Community asked to support college student housing project

A campaign has been launched to raise money for the new student housing and integrated childcare centre at the Vernon campus of Okanagan College.

Jane Lister, Okanagan College regional dean for North Okanagan, and Mike Tindall, chair of the community fundraising campaign, outlined the plan to Coldstream council Monday, Feb. 13, and requested a grant of $150,000 for the project.

The fundraiser will support escalated construction costs, furnishing and equipment, an outdoor play area and student bursaries.

The $15.7 million housing project will create 100 beds in 88 suites of on-campus affordable lodging for students attending the campus, and is projected to be finished in 2024.

The housing will be a mix of studios, 2-bedroom and 4-bedroom units.

The childcare centre will be for student parents, operated by Maven Lane, and would offer the $10/day program.

The province is investing $66.5 million in the Vernon project, plus 60 beds at OC in Salmon Arm, and 216 more beds at the Kelowna campus, increasing the total to 360.
