Vernon sees highest weekly COVID-19 total since March

Greater Vernon had the highest weekly new COVID-19 case totals in more than six months last week.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC)’s weekly report shows there were 43 confirmed cases of the virus in the Vernon Health Area between September 25 and October 1.

That is the highest weekly total on record since 51 were confirmed in the week of March 6 to 12.

The new figures were also up from the 29 confirmed the week prior.

Vernon’s 43 new cases were part of 166 confirmed in the Interior and 697 in all of B.C.

The BCCDC’s new figures were up from the 143 cases in Interior Health and 636 in all of B.C. from the previous week.

While overall cases rose, the cases resulting in hospitalizations or deaths declined.

In the latest week, there were 185 British Columbians in hospital with COVID-19, including 23 in the Interior. Those were down from the previous week’s hospitalization figures of 198 and 31, respectively.

It was also noted that critical care admissions in B.C. fell from 31 to 28 in the latest week, while the Interior’s total ICU patients declined from five to three.

There were a total of 19 deaths linked to COVID-19 in B.C. in the most recent week, four of which were in the Interior. That figure was also down from 34 deaths in all of B.C., including six from the Interior, identified in the previous week’s report.

To date, there have been 385,599 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in all of B.C., including 68,710 in the Interior.

A total of 4,321 British Columbians have died due to the virus, including 647 deaths in the Interior.

The BCCDC did not provide hospitalization or death figures for individual health areas.
