The City of Vernon will soon have more park land.

Declassified motions from Monday’s city council meeting shows that the city is purchasing two properties to add to the park network.

City administration has been tasked with buying a 3.6 acre parcel of land at the southwest corner of 3398 Davison Road to attach to the Grey Canal Trail and a nearly two acre parcel of land at 125 Kalamalka Lake Road.

The Davison property costs $118,895. Of that, 99 per cent will come from the parks development cost charges held in a trust by the Regional District of North Okanagan and one per cent of casino reserves. The RDNO is also contributing $44,534 for the purchase.

The property on Kalamalka Lake Road, located near the Alpine Centre, costs $192,000.

Speaking with Vernon Matters, Mayor Victor Cumming was very excited about the addition of these parks, particularly the property on Davison Road.

“That’s a lovely creek area with a beautiful view scape and a lovely site for a park and we get the Grey Canal Trail,” said Cumming.

“A very critical link between the section that comes from Blue Jay subdivision to Turtle Mountain will now be able to connect to the section that starts in behind Davison Orchard and takes us out to Pinto [Place], or just below The Rise.”

With this addition, there remains just 100 metres needed to connect the full 35 kilometre trail.

While he said this property was a very crucial addition to the trail, Cumming was also excited for the property on Kalamalka Lake Road.

“An excellent connection will be able to be made from Sawicki Park along that beautiful edge of that escarpment all the way out to the Coldstream boundary.”

Along with connecting parks and trails, these additions create new recreation areas for residents and their families and pets.

Cumming also noted these are critical habitats and important to maintain.
