Okanagan Falls set to become B.C.’s newest municipality this fall

Jun 24, 2026 | 2:00 PM

The Province is moving ahead with the creation of a new municipality in Okanagan Falls.

The decision follows a successful vote in March 2025, when residents supported becoming a municipality. The new District of Okanagan Falls is scheduled to be formally incorporated on Nov. 6, 2026.

Once in place, the community will shift from regional district governance to a locally elected mayor and four councillors, who will take office following the Oct. 17, 2026, general local election.

Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Christine Boyle says the move marks a significant step in giving residents more direct control over local decisions and services.

“This is an important milestone for the community,” Boyle said in a statement. “Our government is committed to supporting a smooth and successful transition to local governance.”

Under the new model, the municipality will assume responsibility for a range of local services, while some infrastructure, including roads, will continue to be supported by the Province for a transition period. Water and sewer services will remain with the regional district for up to three years after incorporation.

The Okanagan Falls incorporation is the first municipal incorporation in British Columbia in 16 years.
