Electric buses coming to Kelowna

Jun 25, 2026 | 3:24 PM

The public transit fleet will be getting some additions.

The Kelowna Regional Transit System will be receiving heavy-duty electric buses.

The first few were expected to arrive and enter service within the coming weeks, and a total of 22 electric buses will be delivered over the summer.

The buses, delivered through joint funding from provincial and federal programs, will be quieter and more energy efficient than their diesel counterparts.

Each bus would also save the roughly one tanker truck’s worth of diesel per year, which equates to about 550 fill-ups for a mid-size car.

“Upgrading BC Transit’s fleet with 22 electric buses marks an important step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building a greener future for Kelowna and the surrounding region,” Stephen Fuhr, MP for Kelowna and Secretary of State for Defence Procurement, said.

“Canada’s government is proud to support projects that deliver energy-efficient transit to municipalities. We will continue to champion healthier, more sustainable communities for generations to come.”

Kelowna’s Hardy Street facility was also being upgrades with 32 charging stations to support the new electric bus fleet.

“It is exciting to see Kelowna’s first electric buses arriving and preparing to enter service,” Tom Dyas, Mayor of Kelowna, stated.

“This is an important milestone as we work with BC Transit to transition toward a zero-emission fleet. Electric buses support cleaner air and are quieter than their diesel counterparts, while helping us reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Investments like the upgrades at the Hardy Street Facility ensure our transit system is ready for the future and able to expand service in a sustainable way.”

The electric buses for Kelowna are among 125 being dispatched across B.C. through the government partnership.
