The owner of a property management business running in the upcoming Vernon byelection has a focus on addressing local housing market issues.

Sherrilee Franks, the managing broker of the rental division for Keystone Property Management, tells Vernon Matters that her experience makes her particularly interested in Vernon’s housing market troubles.

“I sit on committees and belong to associations at the provincial level,” Franks said in an email.

“I am actively involved in discussions to address housing issues with other communities and I continue to identify topics required for education to make available to the public and professionals.”

She noted that she would want to work with third party suppliers and owners to decrease the cost of rent and support the development of higher density housing in Vernon, if elected.

Another key focus of Franks’ platform is supporting non-profit organizations, which she says “are the heart of Vernon.

“Without these organizations the community of Vernon as we know it does not exist.”

Franks said that groups like the Historic O’Keefe Ranch, Schubert Centre, Vernon Women in Business and the North Okanagan Canada Day Society, just to name a few, have worked tirelessly despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and she will support these and other groups that serve the community.

Franks also told Vernon Matters that she is supportive of the city’s climate action plan, and would work to create a strategic plan to meet the goals set out.

Franks first moved to Vernon in 1989, where she attended elementary and high school. She said her family moved frequently, and that she resided in a number of nearby communities such as Armstrong, Spallumcheen and Falkland over the years. She returned to Vernon and began working in real estate in 2016 with a focus on tourism.

Her first voyage into politics was in 2018, when she ran in the Vernon municipal election.
