COVID cases down again in B.C., 72% have at least one vaccine

British Columbia had 481 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend.

That works out to an average of 160 cases per day.

The case counts were 217 from Friday to Saturday, 131 from Saturday to Sunday and 133 from Sunday to Monday (June 7).

Interior Health had 101 of the new cases, with 70 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 285 in Fraser Health, nine in Island Health and 15 in Northern Health.

B.C. has 2,102 active cases with 199 people in hospital and 63 in critical care.

There were 12 more COVID-related deaths, with eight in Fraser Health and four in Vancouver Coastal. B.C.’s death toll is now at 1,722

Dr. Reka Gustafson, deputy provincial health officer, told Monday’s update, 74 per cent of adults (18 and older) and 72 percent of those 12 and over, have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine (39 per cent of youth 12-17).

It works out to 3,635,795 doses, with 314,246 second doses.

Dr. Gustafson said people who got the AstraZeneca vaccine for their first shot will start to get invitations for second doses this week, as the period between doses has been shortened to eight weeks.

Update on outbreaks:

·        Kelowna General Hospital unit 3E has three cases: two patients and one staff.

·        Spring Valley long-term care in Kelowna has 48 cases: 36 residents, 12 staff/other, with 11 deaths connected to the outbreak.
