Local charities receive grants for recovery efforts

Struggling local charities are getting some help.

The United Way Southern Interior B.C. has announced another round of COVID relief funding that will see 33 programs receive over $436,000 in the coming weeks.

The funding comes from the Government of Canada Emergency Community Support Fund and the United Way’s COVID Relief Fund.

The United Way has now allocated close to $1.9-million in the past six months to 94 local charities and other qualified donees. The funds will provide financial support to programs adapting their frontline services to support vulnerable Canadians during the pandemic.

In 2020 through all the various granting programs, United Way invested nearly $4 million. With donations declining and the devastating effects of the pandemic, the need is far greater now more than ever.

“The pandemic has brought up endless challenges for local charities and as a result, this only scratches the surface of the incredible need in the community as they adapt to COVID-19 protocols and delivery of services,” says Kahir Lalji, Executive Director of United Way SIBC. “We have seen close to a 70 per cent increase in need and we need your help more than ever.
