Only essential travel

Horgan recommending Canadian travel restrictions

With rising COVID-19 cases in many areas of Canada, B.C. Premier John Horgan said he has recommended the federal government encourage residents of provinces to stay within their provinces except for essential travel.

“I’m going to reach out to the prime minister. We need a pan-Canadian approach to travel,” Horgan said at a media conference on Wednesday. “We need to ensure the people in Coquitlam are living under the same rules as the people in Chicoutimi. We need to make sure that those who want to come to B.C must only do so if it is essential for their business or their well being.”

On another topic, the members of the new B.C. government will be sworn into office next week.

Horgan said his NDP caucus, which now has 57 MLAs, will be sworn in Tuesday, Nov. 24 in a virtual ceremony, and his new cabinet will be introduced two days later, on Nov. 26.

There are 23 new members of the legislature since last month’s election, including Harwinder Sandhu, the new NDP MLA for Vernon-Monashee.

Horgan said a “short session” of the B.C. Legislature will begin Dec. 7, starting with a “brief throne speech” outlining the plan for dealing with COVID-19.

“[It will be] talking about how do we as a province address the challenges of COVID-19? How do we stay safe? How do we take care of each other? How do we keep our economy going? How do we keep our schools in place in a safe manner so that our kids can get the education they need and we can reduce anxiety right across the province,” stated Horgan, 61, who has been premier since 2017.

Horgan added “these are very challenging times,” but residents can’t give up the cause to flatten the COVID curve after nine months of working together.
