UPDATE: Military device found by hikers in park now removed

UPDATE May 17

Vernon Matters reached out to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP for an update on the situation, and found out the item has been removed from the park and the situation is resolved.

“The military arrived yesterday [Saturday] afternoon and dealt with it,” said Cpl. Tania Finn. “There are no longer any closures due to the ordnance.”

A couple of hikers walking off trail in the Cosens Bay area of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, came across what is believed to be an unexploded World War Two ordnance.

Suspected military ordnance found by hikers in Cosens Bay area of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park (submitted/RCMP)

On Friday (May 15) around 4:45 p.m., RCMP were advised of the location of the device.

At one time the Cosens Bay area, which is in Coldstream, had been used as a testing range for mortar rounds and military training.

“Our frontline officers attended the area, examined the item and sent photos to the RCMP Explosive Disposal unit,” said Cpl. Tania Finn.

Given the paint markings on the device, it is believed to be live ordnance.

“We have the area cordoned off in order to ensure the safety of park users while we await the attended of the Canadian Forces Explosive Disposal Unit from Esquimalt,” said Finn, media relations officer.

At this time, the Sidewinder trail will be closed and the Cosens Bay trail has restricted access. Cosens Bay Road remains open for vehicle traffic.

RCMP have two police officers on scene to direct people away from the area and it is anticipated the military will arrive late Saturday afternoon.
