Kal Beach still closed

What’s open — and what’s not — for long weekend

May 15, 2020 | 5:10 AM

Many people are wondering what’s open and what isn’t heading into the Victoria Day long weekend.

The provincial parks in our area including Kalamalka Lake, Ellison, Kekuli Bay and Enderby Cliffs — have reopened for day use.

The District of Coldstream is working on reopening some of its community facilities, but chief administrative officer Trevor Seibel says there are no plans to open Kal Beach in time for the long weekend.

“We will have additional bylaw enforcement resources available to assist over the long weekend,” Seibel told Vernon Matters.

The City of Vernon will open its tennis and pickleball courts for casual use as of Friday.

“Court users are reminded to maintain proper physical distancing, regularly clean their hands, avoid arriving early or lingering after play time, and to not gather in groups. If anyone is sick, they are asked to remain at home and not use public facilities,” said city communications manager Christy Poirier.

All playground equipment, the Polson Park waterpark, the Peanut Pool and indoor recreation facilities remain closed.

Most outdoor spaces in Vernon have remained open, but some courts and outdoor equipment were closed to address physical distancing challenges and reduce high touch points in the community.

City ambassadors will be spending time in local parks, beaches, and outdoor spaces throughout the long weekend.

“These teams provide information to members of the public about how to take part in outdoor activities safely, while continuing to follow the directives of Dr. Bonnie Henry, BC’s Provincial Health Officer,” said Poirier.

Greater Vernon Recreation Services continues to work closely with the BC Recreation & Parks Association (BCRPA) on a framework for reintroducing other activities, programs and recreation opportunities to residents in a way that will allow for participation while meeting the health criteria.
