Highway 1 Reopens After Fatal Crash

Highway 1 Reopens After Fatal Crash

Jul 17, 2019 | 2:13 PM

UPDATE:

DriveBC says Highway 1 has reopened at 4:45 p.m. but there is heavy congestion and drivers should expect delays.

Highway 1 has been closed in both directions approximately 33 kilometres east of Revelstoke due to a fatal collision, RCMP reported Wednesday.

Revelstoke RCMP and emergency services headed to the scene on Highway 1 near Canyon Hot Springs around 11:30 a.m.

RCMP investigators determined a commercial dump truck lost control on the road and collided with several other vehicles.

The driver of the dump truck was ejected and died as a result of the crash, according to a police press release.

Police could not say whether anyone else was hurt.

According to information from the scene, it was raining heavily at the time of the collision.

That stretch of highway is popular with summer travellers heading through the Rockies to numerous federal and provincial parks and the accident happened just east of Mount Revelstoke National Park.

The RCMP warned the highway would remain closed for several hours.

Police said this would allow Trans Canada East Traffic Services (TCETS), Commercial Vehicle and Safety Enforcement officers and the BC Coroners Service to continue to process the scene.

Police urged motorists to obey the direction of traffic control personnel at the scene and to monitor DriveBC for updates.
