Vernon Mayor Presides Over Last Council

Mayor Presides Over Last Council Meeting

Oct 10, 2018 | 6:09 AM

Members of the outgoing Vernon city council said goodbye Tuesday at the final council session before the October 20th municipal election.

Mayor Akbal Mund, who is running for councillor this time, is not endorsing any of the mayoralty candidates but appears to believe it is a two-way race.

“I think Darrin and Victor are going to have a good fight here. I wish them both well,” Mund said.

Victor Cumming and Darrin Taylor are both running for mayor, as are Erik Olesen and Art Gourley.

Outgoing city councillor Juliette Cunningham was not so shy.

“I am publicly endorsing Mr. Victor Cumming for mayor of Vernon,” Cunningham announced at the end of the council session. “He’s always supported me in my endeavours politically, and also because I believe he has the same values that I try to express here at this table.”

While Mund is shy about backing a new mayor, he has listed people he’d like to see on council, including Brian Quiring, Teresa Durning and Dawn Tucker.

Another outgoing councillor, Catherine Lord, urged voters to think hard before choosing candidates for council.

“I hope before they vote, they will take the time to look at not only what potential candidates are promising, because words are empty, but what they have to-date contributed to our community,” Lord said.
