Devil Is In the Detail

Devil Is In the Detail

The MLA for Vernon Monashee says the NDP’s poverty reduction plan is big on promises, but short on detail.

The Horgan government has introduced legislation aimed at reducing BC’s poverty rate by 25 per cent, and child poverty by 50%, over the next five years.

Liberal Eric Foster calls it a hollow pledge.

“There is nothing in it that would indicate how they plan to do it, and the only reason they are doing it is because they said we’re going to have a poverty reduction plan by this fall,” Foster tells Beach Radio News.

Foster says he needs to see more details about how the government plans to reach the goals.

“Those are lofty goals, and they are great. You’ve got to have a goal, but you got to have some meat and potatoes in the legislation to show how you are going to get there.”

Poverty Reduction Minister Shane Simpson says they will release more details next spring.

The latest estimates show 678,000 people are living in poverty in BC.
