Accessibility Issues In Forum Spotlight

Physical and attitudinal disability barriers will be the focus of a forum for the Vernon mayoralty candidates tonight.

It’s being hosted by Independent Living Vernon.

Lisa Briggs, a social worker with the agency, says it’s a big issue.

“There is a lot of candidates for this election, and I hope that they get versed on the importance of accessibility in the community,” Briggs tells Beach Radio News.

Briggs says Vernon has 2% more people with disabilities than average, which she says is because people like to live here with the warmer climate.

“There is all kinds of different things (to do with accessibility). Not just sidewalks and issues with that, but also with transportation and accessibility into buildings, all kinds of things.”

The forum is from 6 to 9 pm at the People Place, with a question and answer session from 6:30 to 8:30.

Candidates Victor Cumming, Art Gourley, Erik Oleson and Darrin Taylor have said they will attend.

The 20 people running for councillor have also been invited, but will not be asked questions.
