Mayoralty Hopefuls Square Off

Mayoralty Hopefuls Square Off

Vernon’s mayoralty candidates will talk about their economic visions for the city at a forum tonight.

Victor Cumming, Art Gourley, Erik Olesen and Darrin Taylor have all said they will take part in the event being hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and DVA at the Prestige Inn Ballroom.

Chamber manager Dione Chambers says the candidates will answer four prepared questions.

“They are coming from the business community. I think they’re more business and economic development focused, but there is a bit of a mix of other questions in there for sure,” Chambers tells Beach Radio News.

Chambers doesn’t expect homelessness to be a focus.

“I think there is many forums for that. There has been a few other opportunities, and I think that’s kind of been brought to light, and I think we’re looking at taking the focus in a little different direction.”

Chambers says the 20 council candidates have also been invited to take part.

“We have a meet and greet with the councillor candidates, so they’re set-up trade show style. That will be from 6 to 7. From 7 to 8, we’ll have a mayoral forum, so we have questions that were pre-prepared by the business community, from the Chamber and DVA.”

The first couple hours are for ticket buyers only, while the final hour — from 8 to 9 — is open to the public.
