Just One Lane For 20th, Says City

There’s been an explanation from the City of Vernon as to why only a one-way, southbound road is being built from Stickle Road to behind RONA.

City spokesperson Nick Nilsen says the province never offered to pay for a two-way road expansion of 20th Street.

“That would be wonderful if they were offering but they did not offer to pay for that,” Nilsen says.

The extension was considered necessary as left hand turns from Stickle Road onto Highway 97 will not be allowed under the intersection upgrade expected to be done this fall.

The 20th Street extension is expected to be completed next year.

While the road may one day become two way, it won’t be at the cost of the Vernon taxpayer, according to Nilsen.

“In time we expect development will occur there and we expect at that time the roadway will be made into two-way traffic at the developer’s expense,” Nilsen says.

He points out that a two-way road before development of the area could mean tearing it up later to rejig water mains and gas lines.

The road will provide a southbound connection to the city.
