Lumby Adopts Bylaw Amendments On Cannabis & Pets

Lumby Council has adopted amendments to a couple of key bylaws.

The Parks and Public Places bylaw has a text amendment to add the word ‘cannabis’ to smoking regulations as as the village prepares for recreational marijuana sales.

Mayor Kevin Acton says it just a matter of ensuring there’s no smoking in a public place.

He says he’d prefer to having wording to explain where you can smoke marijuana.

“I’d rather make some designated areas where people can use it. I’m a little bit disappointed that the government said no smoking lounges because I think that would be the solution to keeping it out of the kids view.”

Acton says he knows he has to listen to every view on the matter.

Council also confirmed changes to its animal control bylaw limiting the number of companion animals in a home to three.

Mayor Acton says it was prompted by several complaints last year over animal control issues, including complaints about one home with about 30 cats.

A survey also showed 57 per cent of people questioned felt three was a good maximum.

“If you had four animals and you took really good care of them and nobody was bothered by it, I’m sure you’d be fine. But it does put something in place that we can deal with people that are not taking care of their animals.”

Acton says enforcing the bylaw will be complaint driven.

Contravening the animal bylaw could mean a fine f as high as 300 dollars.
