New Federal Party Holds Vernon Meeting

New Federal Party Holds Vernon Meeting

Sep 17, 2018 | 10:30 AM

An effort is underway to form a North Okanagan Shuswap association for Canada’s new right of centre federal party.

Former Conservative M-P Maxime Bernier from Quebec has formed the People’s Party of Canada, and plans to run a candidate in every riding next year.

Vernon resident Glen Walushka — a former director with the local Conservatives —  along with former Tory nomination candidate Janet Green, are holding a meeting at the Village Green Hotel tonight at 6:30 to gauge the local interest.

“Originally we thought that Andrew Scheer would probably be the best candidate to keep the party together, but it’s turned out that the Conservative Party of Canada right now seems to be very very similar in almost all aspects to what the Liberals are doing current, and that’s not very good for our economy,” Walushka told Beach Radio News.

“It’s probably not even good when it comes to policies related to social issues. There needs to be some separation and differentiation, and the only guy we’ve found that was actually honest and who’s been consistent in his message when it comes to the small c type conservatism has been Maxime Bernier,” adds Walushka, a former corporate banker who has run a multi-media company for 25 years.

Walushka says there is a lot of interest in the party locally.

“One of the things we’ve been looking at doing with a number of people that have been primarily Conservative, but people who are libertarian in their outlook, and small government oriented in their outlook, we’re looking for a candidate for this particular riding, and will be interview someone this morning,” adds Walushka.

Critics of Bernier’s new party has said it will only split the right wing vote and allow an easier path to a second term for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals in 2019.
