Cyclist Struck in Kelowna, Vernon Driver Stays At Scene

A cyclist has been injured in a collision along Highway 33 in Kelowna’s Rutland neighbourhood.

Police arrived on the scene near the intersection of Highway 33 West and Aurora Crescent after 1 p.m. where they found an unconscious 26-year-old man who was taken to hospital.

The RCMP say the owner of an SUV, a 31-year-old Vernon woman, remained at the scene and was cooperating.

After speaking to witnesses at the scene, police said it appeared the vehicle involved, a Toyota Rav4, was starting from a stopped position on Aurora Crescent, making a righthand turn in the westbound lanes of Highway 33, when the collision occurred with the eastbound cyclist.

“Our officers are investigating, in an effort to determine exactly what factors contributed to this unfortunate crash,” states RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Given the information gathered at the scene, police suspect that the cyclist may have been riding on the sidewalk alongside the highway, in the opposite direction of the flow of traffic.”

Police were told that emergency medical crews initially arrived on scene to find the male cyclist unconscious.

The cyclist, a Kelowna man, has since been transported to hospital, by BC Ambulance Service, for further medical assessment and treatment of his injuries.

The collision investigation continues at this time, charges have not yet been laid, and witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to contact Cst. Marvin Park of the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
