City Seeking More Details On Pot Regulations

Enderby’s mayor isn’t ready to have his city jump into the retail cannabis market.

Greg McCune says Monday’s announcement of the regulations on recreational cannabis sales is a good guideline.

He says there are still missing pieces of the puzzle.

“There’s just so many things that, I won’t say that they haven’t thought about, but they haven’t got around to sharing their thoughts. Again, from our aspect we’re still looking at some revenue sharing.”

McCune says his council has been working and talking about how it will handle potential retailers, but has to have more details.

He says the issue is complex.

“Everything from, you know, WorkSafe, hasn’t really come out and said what they’re thinking. It’s good to hear that they’re going to allow landlords to control their places because I know that’s been a fear for a lot of people.”

McCune says he believes it’s going to take longer than people think to sort out how everything is going to be implemented.

The government said it will allow cities and municipalities to set their own restrictions.

The mayor isn’t sure where to go with that, looking for a balance without interrupting the lives of long-time residents.

“They’re on an incredible block and they’ve got incredible neighbours and they’re just so happy to be where they are. So to make the mistake and allow that to be thrown out the window just because there’s this new legislation that not everyone understands,” McCune tells CJIB News.

He says it’s important to move cautiously to preserve what Enderby is all about.
