Small Fire Along Okanagan Lake Visible From Peachland

Oct 2, 2017 | 10:30 AM

The BC Wildfire Service is monitoring a small wildfire that has broken out along the shore of Okanagan Lake across from Peachland.

Fire information officer Justine Hunse says it’s estimated at about 1 hectare in size about 2 kilometres north of Rattlesnake Island

“The fire was reported and discovered early this morning and is currently burning rank one to rank two.  What that means is we`re looking at a smouldering ground fire with some visible open flame.”

At this point, no crews have been dispatched.

“The BC Wildfire Service is currently developing a response strategy in conjunction with local land managers like the local forest district and BC Parks.”

Hunse says it may be that crews won’t have to be sent, allowing the fire to manage itself.

“Sometimes as we move into the shoulder season conditions can be conducive to what we call a modified response. We would manage and steer a fire and allow it to burn within a pre determined perimeter.”

Hunse says the fire is not burning near any properties.
