Lumby Mayor Optimistic Of UBCM Connections

Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton says his trip to the UBCM last week in Vancouver was productive.

He other village officials met with various ministry officials on housing a flood mitigation.

Acton says he feels like they were heard.

“When you can sit down with staff and have a good conversation and really get some head nodding and people understanding from where you’re coming from I’m hoping the recommendations that go back to the ministers in those areas will be open to ideas for solving some of our problems.”

Acton says flood mitigation and prevention was the biggest item on his agenda.

The Mayor and his team met with Emergency Management BC to talk more about prevention than response when it comes to flooding.

“We’ve got some earthworks in place this time and we’re hoping to that we can get support to finish the work and make some permanent structures and ultimately save the province and the village a lot more money than what we’re spending.”

Among other issues, Kevin Acton, laid out the need for Lumby to get help for affordable housing.

He also wanted to get across some of the ideas the village has in its strategic plan for housing.

“We’re looking at all sorts of things from laneway houses to fourplexes to carriage homes to single family dwellings on smaller lot sizes, marketable housing.”

Acton says he was encouraged by what housing minister Selena Robinson had to say about the government’s plans to help with the homeless issue.
