Vernon School Board Catchment Issues

Sep 29, 2017 | 10:36 AM

The Vernon School District is trying to get a handle on better use of some of its elementary schools.

The school board heard this week that two schools on the west side of town need to be looked at.

Board Chair Kelly Smith says the boundary review sub-committee studied the catchment area.

“There could possibly be a boundary change between Ellison and Okanagan Landing. So the board did approve that there will be a meeting for public input.”

No decision was made on when that should be.

Meanwhile, Smith says  the district is still waiting to hear on funding for expansion of two other schools.

“The committee won’t meet anymore until we find out if we get the  funding to expand BX Elementary and Alexis Park Elementary.”

A four classroom addition is proposed for Alexis Park and a 10 classroom addition for BX.

The board has approved a request by parents at Coldstream Elementary school to allow sibling children to attend the same school.

A catchment adjustment earlier in the year meant some kids would have to go to Kidston Elementary.

Board Chair Kelly Smith says the boundary review sub-committee agreed to a grandfathering clause.

“Provided there’s adequate space available leaving some space for incoming catchment students and we’ll need to know which siblings that might affect, so they should register those kids now.”

About 7 students would be affected.
