RespectFEST Review Underway

Organizers of RespectFEST last week are pretty happy with how the event went.

Annette Sharkey with the Social Planning Council says the various agencies involved were gratified by the turnout.

She says the whole focus of diversity and multiculturalism got people thinking

“And what I saw were people really thinking about things. One of the things we did was ask the question what does respect mean to you. And at some of the venues people actually got to write a word or do an image.”

Sharkey says the event helped those involved look at their own programs and see what can be added to allow the community to learn more about the history and cultures we have here.

A couple of legacy projects from the event are also being worked on.

“We have a public art piece that we’re still working on a location but as soon as we have that it will be announced. But the pieces have been made by the community. Those workshops sold out. So we had approximately 250 people help to create this mosaic.”

The other project is an indiginous garden at Okanagan College.

The final report on the event will include stories that came out of festivities.

“We want to get the stories out because we know quite a bit happened. We had so many different things happening in different parts of the community. We’ll probably have about ten stories that we’re going to pull out Have some photos. Kind of do some interviews with some of the organizations that were involved.”

Once the final report is done it will be presented to Vernon City Council, likely early November
