City Hopeful Of Ending Parking Meter Vandalism

Sep 27, 2017 | 7:09 AM

The City of Vernon is hopeful police and bylaw officers can get a handle on parking meter vandalism.

RCMP say at least 83 meters have been hit in the last several week.

Vernon’s new manager of Protective Services Geoff Gaucher says it’s been an expensive year so far

“We’re seeing some on 30th Avenue, right on the main street. And then it kind of moves around and usually in the early morning hours.”

He says maintenance staff usually find them in the morning.

” So, typically our maintenance staff find it as they go out during the day. I think last week we were getting 4, 5, 6, 7 every night and then it just kind of stopped for awhile.”

He’s hoping the public can help put a stop to it.

“The RCMP said let’s see if we can engage the public because they’re out all the time. So, if you see some folks walking down the street pausing at all the parking meters, that might be thing you could call the police about.

The cost of repairing meters can run as high as 300 dollars.
