Vernon Transit Survey Underway

Sep 22, 2017 | 7:13 AM

Today’s your day to have a chance to talk about transit in Vernon.

BC Transit and the City of Vernon are holding a series of consultations today and online about some proposed service changes.

Jonathon Dyck with BC Transit says it`s important to have the public involved.

“What we want to do when we’re looking at service changes and trying to make the system more effective and efficient and adding more hours is come out to the public and say this is what we’re proposing to do. Does this work for you and listen to that feedback.”

Four routes are being looked at.

“Making route changes to number two Pleasant Valley, number three Alexis Park, number 7 OK Landing and number 8 Bella Vista”

The changes would add 7 thousand hours of service to the system.

“What they’re trying to do is look at a new route providing a direct connection from downtown Vernon to retail; destinations at the north wend of Vernon.”

The survey`s will be done today at the downtown bus exchange from 7 am to 9 am and 1 pm to 3 pm, the Schubert Centre from 10 to 12 and Walmart from 4 pm to 6 pm.

It will also be done tomorrow at the RespectFEST Festival at Civic Square from 10 am to 4 pm.

Click here to access the survey online until October 6th.

The changes would go into effect in March of next year.

The city’s share in the cost of the changes would be about 419 thousand dollars.

In the meantime, Dyck says discussions are still going on between Transit, The City, and the Village Green Mall owners about how best to restore the bus stop on the mall property.

He says it remains a safety issue.
