Conservation Fund Proposed For North Okanagan

Sep 21, 2017 | 11:25 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan has been asked to consider starting a regional conservation fund.

The Okanagan Collaborative Conservation Program pitched the idea to the RDNO Board Wednesday.

Board Chair Bob Fleming says it`s worth talking about.

“The idea is to generate some funds that would be available for conservation initiatives or to support conservation initiatives.”

Those initiatives could include protecting clean water sources, conserving natural areas for people to enjoy, restoring fish and wildlife habitat, and protecting important ecosystems.

Fleming says the board would discuss it, but there are questions about how to generate those funds.

A similar fund is in place with the South Okanagan Similkameen Conservation program.

Local governments requisition about ten dollars per household a year to supply the fund.

It supports projects and works that include water, environment, wildlife, land and habitat conservation.
