Lake Country Development Proposal Snag

Council in Lake Country has given first reading to a zoning amendment for a controversial housing project.

It would see a three hectare section of property on Okanagan Centre Road West rezoned from rural residential to single family housing and park space.

Mayor James Baker says the project falls within the Official Community Plan and water and sewer lines are already in place.

“We’re looking at more lots to help pay for that infrastructure but how much density in an established neighbourhood are what the issues are.”

The proposal would see a 40 lot development, while opponents want fewer homes on larger lots.

“There’s some resistance from the neighbourhood in that it could go with a few less lots but of a larger size and it would be more in keeping with the neighbourhood.”

James Baker says more discussions would have to be held with the developer to see how many fewer homes would be viable.

Tree retention and traffic flow is also an issue.

The Mayor says more homes always mean more traffic which would eventually flow to Highway 97.

He says the intersection of Highway 97 and Glenmore Road has needed to be addressed for years but the Highways Ministry hasn’t shown much interest in dealing with it.

The project will eventually go to a public hearing.
