Enderby Council adopted a bylaw Monday night regulating marijuana-related businesses.
There are no applications before the city yet for a shop.
But Mayor Greg McCune says the city wants to be ready.
“Again very similar to most other communities. If it’s going to be a business, we’d hope that you’re a business person with integrity.”
The bylaw states any marijuana -related business must obtain a Municipal Business License to operate.
McCune says he just wants any operator to be up front about what they are planning.
” Are we opposed to it, no. But if you’re going to come and that’s your business plan just be like any other business. Come through the door at city hall. tell us what you got going on and we’ll see what we can do.”
The mayor isn’t sure about the idea of allowing marijuana sales in liquor stores.
“You know how difficult it is now to go in when a liquor store is busy just to pick up a bottle of wine. Now you’ve added 185 strains of marijuana.”
He doesn’t see much logic in that other than putting money into government coffers.
The provincial government has yet to decide what it’s going to do, waiting to talk with other provinces to see what their plans are.
Enderby’s bylaw places several restrictions.
The business must demonstrate the proposed use is lawful under all applicable Provincial and federal statutes and regulations.
No marijuana-related business shall be located within 100 metres of any residential zone, daycare facility, preschool, playground, community centre, school, public park, civic or religious institution or any use catering to individuals under the age of 18.
