North Okanagan-Shuswap Official School Trustee Going Nowhere

Sep 18, 2017 | 5:55 AM

With schools back and school boards meeting to keep education needs on track, there’s been some talk of what to do with the North Okanagan-Shuswap trustee situation.

Mike McKay has been the government-appointed Official Trustee since the elected board was fired.

McKay has a lot of support from parents.

“And that’s really appreciated and I know that there was talk and I suppose there will continue to be talk about whether there will be a byelection and that’s not in my hands. That’s a government decision.”

It appears though, the government isn’t ready to make that move.

“As things are looking right now my commitment is to stay on until the regular schedule election in the fall of 2018. The support from the parents and other partner groups has been heart warming.”

McKay says a lot has been done to keep things on track in School District 83 and growing.

“There are tough decisions to be made.We did some hard work and heavy lifting last year last year and there will be more this year I’m sure. But it’s a good place to be and I’m honoured to be connected with the work here.”

McKay says it shows how people can work together to get things done.
