Games Holds Street Festival

Part of 30th Avenue in downtown Vernon will be closed to vehicles from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm today.

It’s for an event for the 55 Plus BC Games which is into its second day of competition in the area.

Games President Wee Yee says they are trying something different.

“We are closing off four blocks in downtown on 30th Avenue, and we’re going to have a street festival. We call it the Taste of the Okanagan artisan market,” Yee tells Kiss FM.

Yee says it will feature local businesses and attractions unique to the area along with entertainment.

“We will be highlighting what our bounty is in this area, and in a festive atmosphere, so we’ll have some entertainment stages.”

Highway 97 will remain open.

And after weeks of smoky skies in the Okanagan, Yee is pleased to see great weather for the event.

“I tell you what, my knees are sore from praying for this weather. We are so excited because a week ago  we were looking at rain, but now the temperatures are great. When you’re competing outdoors, you don’t want it too hot,” says Yee.

About 36-hundred participants from around BC, aged from 55 to 97, are competing in 27 sports until Saturday in Vernon, Coldstream, Spallumcheen and Armstrong.
