Coldstream Boat Launch Closures Recommended

Sep 14, 2017 | 8:51 AM

Coldstream Council’s Tourism Committee is recommending the closure of two boat launches to motorized vessels.

Councillor Glen Taylor says the Westkal and Kinloch launches don’t measure up.

“They’re not great launches for boats already and thought that it would be better suited to use them for paddleboarders and non-motorized watercraft.

Both launches have been closed this summer because of flooding this spring.

Boaters have been managing well with the Kalavista Park launch since it reopened.

Glen Taylor says the committee felt keeping them away from the other two would be beneficial to people using non-motorized craft.

“I guess the feeling was there is a lot of growth in that type of sport and they don’t have good access to the lake.”

Taylor says council will look at the issue and no decision would be made without public consultation.

Then there is the whole issue of the health of Kal Lake and the increase in boat traffic and how it affects the north end of the lake.

A study is being done on the future of boating on both Kal and Wood Lakes.

“In the presentation that was provided there was silt testing done but most of that testing was done at the south end of Kal Lake and the results that they had at the north end weren’t consistent with what was happening at the south end”

He says more testing needs to be done.
