Salvation Army Celebrates Vernon Anniversary

The Salvation Army is celebrating 111 years of service in Vernon this weekend.

Lieutenant Stephan Reid says a series of events are being held.

A dinner for 100 Friday night is sold out, but the rest of the weekend is open.

“Saturday at 1pm we have our free kids carnival with bouncy castles, face painting, popcorn, all sorts of things. Then we have some worship services happening on Saturday evening at 6:30 and then again on Sunday at 10:30.”

It’s all happening at the House of Hope at 3303 32nd Avenue

Lieutenant Reid says the Army has done a lot over the years.

“We’ve done a lot of ministry in 111 years with our thrift stores and moving locations. The food bank being here for just about 35 years now. Also, the Talking Donkey coffee shop has been something that the community remembers very well.”

Reid says the Army will be remembering the past, celebrating the present and anticipating the future.

“We expect the future to be very similar to what it is now. We`re going to help meet the peoples needs. We`re going to share the love of Jesus and
we`re going to preach the gospel as well.”

When it began, the Vernon branch was the only one in the Okanagan and served communities from Penticton to Salmon Arm and Kamloops.
