Finlay Fire Grows

The Finlay Creek wildfire southwest of Peachland is a bit larger this morning.

BC Wildfire Service information officer heather Rice says the fire has grown to 1,300 hectares.

“We have seen a little bit of increase in the fire as it kind of wraps around what we call Mt. AcLand in the area, but still well within the guards of the fire.”

That growth is in an area of steep terrain.

Rice says crews overnight made progress in building guards along the southeast flank of the fire where heavy equipment can be used.

Fire information officer Heather Rice says 57 firefighters are still working the fire and hoping for assistance.

“Yeah, we continue to have a few more resources, hoping for some folks to come from some other fires but I know it’s a very busy fire season.”

Ground crews are backed by 23 pieces of heavy equipment and 10 helicopters.

Rain is expected tomorrow, but Heather Rice doesn’t expect that to be significant.

“Based on the forecast, not likely. I mean it can`t hurt to have a bit of showers but it sounds like they’re talking about anywhere from point five to maybe two millimetres which will calm things down a little bit, but it certainly won’t put the fire out.”

The forecast for today is much the same as yesterday, with smoke, and winds have been light.

That smoke may limit the use of the air attack against the fire.
