Red Tape Keeps Tennis Courts Closed

May 1, 2017 | 7:38 AM

A Vernon city councilor wonders why a local park is stuck in a bureaucratic sinkhole.

Brian Quiring says the Canadian Lakeview Residents Association has been trying to get moss and debris cleaned off the Deer Park tennis courts so they can use it.

“The resident’s association, I met with them, brought it up. Last year they were hoping maybe they could get some of the debris off before the winter. That didn’t happen. Now we’re kind of into the situation where still nothing is happening.”

Quiring says there seems to be a simple solution.

“It doesn’t seem that complicated to me, but I don’t know all the issues.”

In a report to council, city administration says staff are currently determining the feasibility of using a volunteer group to provide services on a city facility.

“If it is determined that this is not in the best interest of the City, there are sufficient funds in the 2017 local parks budget to remove the moss and debris from the tennis court and re-open it provided a more detailed inspection of the finished surface confirms that it is safe for public use,” states the report.
