Petition To Dump GST From Carbon Tax Deadline Looms
You still have a few days left to sign a petition by Vernon city councilor Bob Spiers on the federal government’s website.
The petition calls for an end to the GST on the provincial carbon tax.
He says it’s a tax on a tax and that’s not fair.
So far, about 1500 people have signed it.
” All that’s required to have it presented in the house is 500. So, we’ve gone well past that.”
But Spiers says the federal Finance Minister isn’t that interested when the issue was brought up before.
” And he hemmed and hawed his way around it, saying basically that he didn’t see the reason for any change in the GST being charged.”
As well, a bill tabled by Langley-Aldergrove MP Mark Warawa seeking the same result is winding its way through Parliament.
Spiers there is some that might bring some benefit.
” There has been sort of indications that perhaps the fall back position for the government is that the GST that is raised will be returned to the provinces.”
The last day to sign the petition is May 4th.
It also has the support of MP Mel Arnold.
