Update: Advance Vote Busy in Vernon-Monashee & Shuswap

May 1, 2017 | 10:41 AM

Elections BC reports a brisk weekend for advancing voting in Vernon-Monashee for the provincial election.

District Elections Officer Jan Mori says two thousand 192 people showed up at the Vernon Rec Centre over two days.

Two hundred and 52 voted at the White Valley Community Centre in Lumby.

“It’s certainly well on our way to a strong advance poll looking at the last election numbers. We had about six thousand ”

That was over four days of advance polling.

This year there are six.

“You know it’s hard to say whether it’s stronger. We’ve never had this first weekend before and certainly not on a Sunday, so this is unknown territory for us.”

Saturday was the busier day at the Rec Centre with various times during the day of waits beyond 30 minutes.

The system is actually faster this election with the use of a computer to do the work that had to be done by hand in the past.

Advance voting resumes Wednesday at the Vernon Rec Centre and the Shubert Centre for four days.

Advance voting in Lumby will be Friday and Saturday at the White Valley Community Centre, but people can also come to Vernon to vote.

Shuswap Elections officer Linda Rivard says 1,549 voted at four polling stations Saturday, with 1,128 on Sunday, for a total of 2,642.
