Sinkhole Cause Determined

The City of Vernon now knows what caused a small sinkhole on 42nd Avenue, just west of the highway.
Public works manager James Rice says the hole, which was first noticed last week, was about three feet in diameter and about a foot deep.
“When crews dug it up, we found it was caused by a collapsed sewer line, so the repair has been done and 42nd Avenue has been reopened to traffic,” Rice tells Kiss FM.
Rice says the remainder of the line will be video inspected to determine if any more repairs are needed between 33rd Street and the highway.
“Obviously pipes age, and failures do occur. We try to keep up on it with video inspection and with timely replacement of these pipes. That’s how we address it,” adds Rice.
