Vernon council has given approval for a new housing project to proceed, despite concerns about traffic, parking and density at a packed public hearing.

The Highlands of East Hill would include 173 housing units on a 20 acre site on 39th Avenue.

Mayor Akbal Mund says council voted to do what they feel is best for the community.

“What this development will do is it will enrich the East Hill area with families and seniors. These homes are smaller homes and they’re right for the individuals, and it’s right for the community,” says Mund.

About 50 people attended the hearing Tuesday

“I know it was mentioned by one of the councillors were allowing the developer a 30 to 50 million dollar profit which obviously is not the case,” Mund told Beach Radio News.

The developer, Stoni Holdings of Kelowna, is planning to start the eight phases of construction next year.

The company bought the land from the City for 6.5 million dollars last year.

Council agreed to upgrade the intersection at 39th Avenue and Pleasant Valley Road, with plans for a roundabout, with the mayor saying funding for that will be up to the next council to budget for.
