Hill On Final Leg of Ultra Event

Aug 22, 2018 | 5:30 AM

Two down — and one to go.

That’s the situation for Vernon athlete Shanda Hill who is into the final leg of the Deca Ultra Triathlon in Switzerland.

Hill has completed a 38 kilometre swim, and an 1800 kilometre bike ride

She says she’s doubled her calorie intake, and is eating more carbs than last year.

“My body temperature is always staying warm. It’s not dropping and never getting low, and I had a problem with that last year because I just couldnt get enugh calories in me,” Hill tells Beach Radio News during a short break in the event.

Hill is in the midst of a 422 km run, which she expects to take about 4 days.

“Just Vernon to Vancouver,” laughed Hill, talking about how far she has to run.

“I feel awesome. I changed up my nutrition a bit and probably over-loaded on my calories this time. I feel really good.”

The 36 year old Hill says her bike ride was about four hours faster than last year.

Hill was in 9th place among the 12 men racing and was first among the two women.

“I’m sleeping three to four hours a night instead of trying to get by on one or two, and it seems to be working out really well.”

It took Hill 276 hours to complete the event last year.
