Vernon Schools Equipped With Naloxone

Naloxone kits will once again be provided in Vernon-area secondary schools this year.

The School District has been a leader in overdose prevention measures in BC schools.

School District Substance Abuse Counsellor Doug Rogers says some people may not like the idea.

“But, it’s more important to be prepared if something were to happen at school that we have the naloxone on campus on campus that we can help kids because we cannot treat a kid that is dead so we have to be prepared.”

Rogers notes they never had to use a naloxone kit last year.

He keeps in touch with other school districts and medical authorities to ensure Vernon is up to date.

“When I speak to my colleagues at the hospital and some of the doctors around town and the folks at emerg, we know that there’s a crisis in this province and we need to be prepared.”

The School District was one of the first to have naloxone kits available should they be needed.

They haven’t, but the District’s Substance Abuse Prevention Counsellor, Doug Rogers, says it’s important to have the training.

“New people, perhaps we need more naloxone. having spoken to some of the docs around town and out of town. Again, it’s a moving target. We just need to be ready.”

Rogers says high schools are prepped with administrators and first aid staff trained and more training will be done.

He encourages parents to talk to their kids about drugs constantly.
