Better roads a top priority for West Kelowna council candidate

Oct 8, 2026 | 11:11 AM

One of the candidates for West Kelowna city council in this month’s election has made better roads a key campaign priority.

Tom Groat, who has spent the past six years serving as President of the Shannon Lake Neighbourhood Association, wants to be behind building safer, better-connected roads and pathways.

On his website, Groat said one of the biggest barriers to using active transportation isn’t a lack of interest, but the gaps in local infrastructure.

“A sidewalk or pathway that suddenly ends, or a safe route that doesn’t connect to the next neighbourhood, can make the difference between someone choosing to walk or cycle and choosing to get in their car. Residents should be able to walk or cycle to local businesses and services without having to navigate busy roads.”

Regarding public safety he said people want to walk through our parks, use trails, shop in neighbourhoods and take their children to community facilities without encountering open drug use, aggressive behaviour or unsafe activity.

But he adds most residents understand that people experiencing homelessness, mental illness or addiction need help.

“I believe the City of West Kelowna should work with the RCMP to ensure that laws and reasonable standards of behaviour are consistently enforced, particularly when these behaviors make public spaces unsafe. Compassion should never mean looking the other way.”
