Downtown Vernon business association aims for improvements

The Downtown Vernon Association has funds to distribute to help improve the downtown core.

The DVA has launched an investment of up to $200,000 to enhance, secure and improve downtown Vernon, led my a new  Façade Improvement Program.

The program offers grants of up to 50 per cent of project costs, or a maximum of $5,000, to improve commercial storefront or business premises. Eligible works include painting, architectural features, siding, awnings, signage, lighting, accessibility improvement, and other enhancements that improve the downtown streetscape.

The overall funding also included $20,000 dedicated towards security enhancements.

The overall goal of the initiative is to enhance downtown properties, improve security, and keep downtown clean.

“We hear consistently that people want a downtown that looks great, feels welcoming and supports businesses willing to invest in their properties,” Keelan Murtagh, Executive Director of the DVA, stated.

“Rather than approaching these issues individually, we saw an opportunity to tackle them together.”

The overall program was also being supported by Community Futures North Okanagan, who were offering eligible businesses access to low-interest financing with flexible repayment terms for their improvements.

“We don’t want access to capital to be the reason a good project doesn’t get to move forward,” said Murtagh.

“We want to give downtown businesses a realistic opportunity to invest in their storefronts and their future. A simple coat of paint has the potential to increase revenue in a meaningful way.”

Applications for the DVA program funding can be found here.

The DVA has also entered into a one year agreement with Goodbye Graffiti to provide professional graffiti removal throughout the downtown core. Businesses in the area that encounter graffiti can contact the DVA to enlist the help and have it removed.
