Efforts to keep the creeks and streams in Greater Vernon clean are still ongoing after nearly two decades.

In 2008, a group of volunteers stepped up to clean a small stretch of BX Creek, and that tradition has continued.

The Rotary Club of Silver Star, which has been involved with the clean up for five years, again adopted a section of BX Creek between Kal Tire Place and Red Top Shoes, and local volunteers involved with keeping the waterway clean hauled away two truckloads of garbage and another load of scrap metal.

“If nothing else, we have made our city a little better – for today and for the past 18 years, and I think that matters,” said Teresa Durning, who joined the efforts at the onset when she was just a member of Tourism Vernon.

During added this project was about more than removing garbage, it was about leaving something better behind than how it was found.

“It is easy to think that one person, one organization or one morning can’t make much of a difference,” she said.

“But when people keep showing up year after year, it adds up. Eighteen years later, we can look back and know that we made a difference.”
