Monte Lake South Fire Held

Aug 1, 2017 | 11:44 AM

BC Wildfire crews are still dealing with a fire that broke out at the south end of Monte Lake yesterday afternoon.

Four small fires actually broke out near Highway 97.

Fire information officer Max Birkner says it is being treated as one fire and is currently held.

“We have 23 firefighters out there. We had 34 yesterday as well as aircraft but today we got 23 out there and they continue to work at it. It is currently estimated at 3.9 hectares in size.”

Birkner says firefighters were able to get a good jump on it last evening to prevent it from spreading.

“They’ve downgraded their number of personnel due to need. They’re holding it now and they are essentially just putting out the hot spots.”

Max Birkner says the fire should not be a danger to grow.

“No unless we get some unforecast wind event or other unusual situation, it’s unlikely this thing is going to spread beyond the boundaries.”

Highway 97 remains open through the area.

The larger Martin Mountain Fire at the north end of Monte Lake is 100 per cent contained.
