Be Mindful Of Heat Stress

With temperatures hitting the mid to high 30’s this week, WorkSafe BC is reminding employers and outdoor workers to prevent against heat stress.

Prevention field services director Dan Strand says they saw 16 accepted claims for injuries caused by heat stroke and exhaustion last year.

“The kind of occupations that we’ve seen and the heat stress related claims include truck and bus drivers, lifeguards, recreation sport and fitness leaders and actually folks on movie picture productions.”

You may be surprised at the number of claims WorkSafe sees when it comes to heat stress.

“Over the past ten years we’ve seen 200 cases of heat stress come in through our claims and as well last year we’ve seen 16 of these accepted claims for related injuries caused by heat exhaustion, heat stroke.”

Heat stress manifests itself in a very noticeable manner.

“As your body sweats to cool down your body is unable to do that. The symptoms that you will notice are excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea and a rapid heart rate.”

Workers are advised to drink plenty of water, and take rest breaks in a cool areas.
