Section of Rail Trail along Mara Lake to be closed for erosion work

A section of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail will be closed through the fall due to some erosion issues.

The issue cropped up along Mara Lake, and will require stabilization work along the trail between Folland Road and Rosemond Lake Bridge.

Starting Monday, Sept. 14, the trail will be closed on weekdays through the fall and into December to acommodate the work, though it will reopen to the public on weekends.

“We had to wait for provincial permits which dictate when the work can be done,” Jeromy Schuetze, Project Construction Manager, said in explaining the timeline for the closure.

“The trail will be closed from Folland Road at Km 2.8 to Rosemond Bridge at Km 14.8. The start date pending the permit issuance is expected any day now. We will work from the south to north and will open sections as we go. Our goal will be to reach Folland Road by Christmas, but this could move either way by a week or two.”

During the course of the work there will still be 21 kilometres of trail between Enderby, Grindrod and Mara for trail users to walk, run and explore.

The Sicamous Ferry shuttle will also continue running on weekends until the Thanksgiving long weekend, ending operations October 12.
