Dutch’s Back In Business

A popular campsite in Coldstream is starting to see business pick-up after several setbacks earlier in the season.

Dutch’s Campground on Kalamalka Road had to shut down just before the Canada Day weekend due to some unsafe trees caused by high water levels undermining the root system.

Owner Darren Dalgarno was finally able to reopen last week, but still had issues.

“After the flooding and then the trees, we’ve had quite a few people concerned about the (wildfire) smoke, so we had some cancellations. Seems like now, we’re getting the overnight tourists and the word is getting out,” says Dalgarno

Dalgarno says a tree company cleaned-up 254 trees on his site, and took down about a dozen of the most dangerous.

“Once we realize the trees along the creek were in dangerous shape, we had them do the entire park, just to make sure we weren’t missing anything.”

An area at the north end of their property is still closed, waiting for the District of Coldstream to have trees on its adjoining site assessed.

“That part we haven’t opened, but we are 80 percent open for camping and there is lots of room for people to come sit at the creek
